D.A.S. Audio 18LX 18" LF Transducer 3600 Watts Replacement Woofer for Event 218, Vantec 18, Action 18

The ever-increasing demands of the high levels of bass and sub-bass, combined with the use of amplifiers of power rating that were until recently unimaginable, necessitate the use of loudspeakers that are capable of responding to these challenges satisfactorily. 

In theory, the speaker should remain in the zone of linear operation. In practice though, the large demand of SPL require the loudspeaker to perform correctly and remain undamaged even outside of the linear zone. The new surround design permits a greater cone excursion without damage.  The 18LX have a Xlim of 23mm (0-pk) without generating noise or mechanical clipping of the signal.  The new surround geometry of the 18LX avoids the generation of back-waves which improves the linearity of the frequency response and distortion levels. 

The improved cone geometry of the 18LX speaker along with the use of new materials and strengthening additives in its manufacture have increased the rigidity of the cone. This has widened the power band in which the speaker works pistonically. The result is higher SPL and a reduction in the distortion levels. 

The new, larger and more rigid dust cap contributes to avoiding radial modes improve linearity and reducing the levels of distortion. 

The new spider design permits large excursions within the zone of linear operation without compromising reliability. The spider's progressive characteristics increase the return force during excessive displacement retaining the voice coil within the magnetic field even under extreme peaks of power. 

Pole piece: Increased height from 8mm to 10mm

Voice coil: Increased from 16mm in height to 21mm 

As a consequence to these modifications, the linear excursion is increased from the Xmas of 6mm (0-pk) to 8mm (0-pk) In practice, this translates to a reduction of distortion when working with high power, widening the power band in which the speaker performs linearly.  Besides positively affecting the linearity, the increased pole piece and voice coil provide a higher power handling capacity (1000 Watts RMS power) and lower power compression.  The voice coil temperature remains low, the impedance rise is less so the amp can deliver more power. 

The response of the 18LX speaker exhibits improved response linearity without the rise of mid frequencies. This simplifies the signal processing when used as a sub or two way system.  In the band pass of 50Hz to 100Hz, critical when used in a subwoofer system.
